The Business-first Attitude The key to any successful venture in life is the passion that drives it. How deep is the passion that drives you down your business trip? Is it strong enough to make you skip or miss meals, forget about a social meeting in which your friends are showing off? Or make you want to remain in the office, working till late hours? How do you respond when pleasure-like activities e.g. a visit form a friend during office hours, hit you at the office? Be truthful to yourself and give yourself an honest answer. Do you all loll away your time with such opportunities or do you try as much as possible to please your business first? The business-first attitude is an unquenchable fire that will keep your business burning for life! If you don’t practice business-first attitude in your business, you are slowly driving your business train into failure city. David Dotlich and Peter Cairo’s book- Why CEOs Fail pointed out that CEOs (and their businesses too) fail because of who they are and how they act in certain situations Both success and failure, is an attitude! This is primarily among the major reason why many small businesses fail. Why? And how, I can hear you say. Okay, I will explain further. Most small business owners are their own bosses. Nobody boots their asses when they get to the office at 12 noon. Nobody queries them for exhibiting this or that anti business behaviour, and over the years, this I-am-the-boss attitude, which is counter-productive, becomes a habit that eventually kills the small business. Old habits die hard, remember. Putting business first, before pleasure will work like magic for you, especially small business owners. You need to see your business as a very vital part of your life. Next to family. In-fact, in clear terms your family wellbeing depends on your business well-being (And vice versa). Your business is your life- blood. It keeps you refreshed and alive, so don’t take it lightly. I’m-the-boss attitude is death trap that kills small and medium scale organizations very fast. In truth more than eighty percent of freshly hatched small businesses fail within five years. Several others are simply struggling to just appear ‘living’. But really, they are better off dead, without the application of profitable business secrets! Is there a solution for this? Could there be a way out of this huge financial wastage? Certainly there is, and it is what I am showing you here in this book. Now, back to it again. How does one develop this attitude? Or maybe it should be “How does one overcome this I’m-the-boss attitude? Whichever way it is paraphrased, the answer remains the same and simple: Pretend you are an employee and your customers are your bosses! It may tingle you a little but there is a big truth in that statement. Who work for whom? Tell me the truth, aren’t you the one that is really serving the customer here? Okay then, who do you really think is the boss? Got it? Now with this in mind you won’t have a line of customers waiting for you to show up while you’re still at home fooling about or lolling in that couch doing practically nothing profitable. Many a time you see it clearly written on the faces of several entrepreneurs (small business owners) that they don’t really know what they are doing. Yes, they don’t really know what they are doing indeed. And that is why they are non-chalant at attending to customers. That is why their services are poor, really poor when compared to that offered by mega businesses. You walk into a mega business and right from the gate you are treated with dignity and respect. Now, that is a great service on its own. Then you are welcomed by the customer service agents who rev up your psyche, make you feel more important than you even think you are, and then they introduce you to their products, sell it to you, and you smile your way out. Great service! On the contrary, many small businesses treat you like are a nobody, just buy and go! And that is why they never grow into a mega business! Having the business-first attitude really teaches you beyond how important your business is, but also how important your customers are. They are the life blood of your business, so you treat them specially. No matter how small your business may be right now, you should endeavour to always take it seriously. Everything about it should be treated as important, first. The article above is culled from CRAZY SALES CRAZY GROWTH!
